The Greater Green Club launch at Eastwise group of schools in Mabvuku facilitated by Forestry & Citrus Research (FACIR) in partnership with Sustainable Climate Action Trust (SCAT).
#FACIR is implementing the Greater Green project with #SCAT, an initiative to plan 1 billion trees by 2030 in #Zimbabwe. The Greater Green club was launched at Eastwise group of schools on 1 April 2022 which managed to capacitate students engagement and participation in tree planting activities. It is planned that the club will spread to other schools to accelate the #sustainable forestry initiatives.
The first session discussed the basic science of climate change and outlined the role of of #trees Climate Change mitigation and #adaptation . Students acknowledged that trees provide oxygen, fruits and nutrients, firewood for cooking, shade during the day and #carbon sequestration. It was noted that forests assist in #disaster risk reduction by reducing surface water runoff and increase #water infiltration, reduces wind speed of strong winds and trees bind the soil together to reduce soil erosion as well.
The need for young people (youth) and women inclusion in #forestry was highlighted as no one should be left behind in sustainable development. The Chief Executive Officer for FACIR Takue Ashley Mlambo officially launched the Greater Green club at the school and members commenced to a tree planting session where they the planted propagated pawpaw and #apple trees.
The session was concluded by a hand over of Climate branded t shirts and caps sponsored by #SCAT and climate informative material provided by the Climate Change Management Dept and the headmaster duly ended the successful event.
